Fishpond’s Ice Storm Cooler, dressed in waxed cotton, is a re-make of the original, to match the company’s luggage collection. It is the same great cooler we have known for years. I have had one since they were first made, probably 8 or more years ago. I never use a rigid cooler in a boat.
Both Fishpond soft sided coolers, the Blizzard and Ice Storm, are great for keeping your food and beverages cold for hours, while reducing weight in your boat, canoe or kayak. What is most innovative about the Ice Storm, is it’s ability to shrink its size, depending on the volume of the contents. Not only is it a weight saver, it can be a space saver too.
We fill ours with gear for long trips in our truck. Then, use it as a cooler when we arrive at our destination. When its use is not a cooler, it is a padded gear bag.
Open the main zipper and pack it with ice, food and drinks, and you will find it is huge and heavy when fully packed, but with all the handles and the strap, you can take it where you need to. The Ice Storm holds a lot of stuff. This cooler has an interior volume of 2,400 cubic inches, over twice that of the Blizzard Cooler.
I like to freeze plastic bottles of water, to use as ice to keep the contents cold, but they can also be consumed as they thaw. That saves space in the Ice Storm and the Blizzard coolers. You can use less ice. If you don’t drink all of the water, re-freeze the bottles and use them next time.
The Fishpond Ice Storm Cooler has one large zipper that allows you to open it completely to fill. The zipper has two slides, so you can open just one corner, or one half, to reach in, without letting all the cold air escape. The two-slide zipper is one important feature most people do not notice at first.
The bottom, sides and top are constructed using multiple layers of insulation, to keep your contents cold for hours. The Ice Storm is waterproof. Water will not leak out. It features Fishpond’s signature molded bottom, a tough base, designed for durability. You will find an exterior pocket for storing zip lock bags, a cutting board and other utensils.
There are lash points for attaching just about anything you can imagine. Transport this cooler using the two carry handles on the end, the main carrying handle in the middle on top, or using the included shoulder strap.
This Ice Storm cooler is special, because it matches other Fishpond luggage pieces. You will be stylish, carrying this into any hotel or lodge. The look is traditional. Most people won’t know it is a cooler. It looks like luggage.
It is great for fly fishing excursions, day trips in your truck or picnics. I have used an Ice Storm in my kayak and our boat, though I prefer two smaller Blizzard Coolers for that. We use two in the boat, one in the bow and the other in the stern. Paula and I also use an Ice Storm Cooler in our beach cart, when surf fishing. It’s perfect for that.
Dimensions are 19” x 11” x 11.5”. Interior volume is 2,400 cubic inches. The exterior color of the waxed cotton is “Earth”.
